As hurricane season approaches, it’s crucial for residents to prepare for potential storms. Here are essential tips to ensure your safety and readiness:
Create An Emergency Kit
Prepare a kit with essentials such as non-perishable food, water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days), a flashlight, batteries, a first aid kit, and any necessary medications. Don’t forget important documents and cash.
Develop An Evacuation Plan
Know your evacuation routes and identify safe locations, such as friends' or family’s homes. Familiarize yourself with local shelters, and consider how you’ll transport pets.
Secure Your Home
Trim trees and secure outdoor furniture. Install storm shutters or board up windows to protect against high winds and flying debris. Check your roof and gutters to ensure they’re in good condition.*
Stay Informed
Sign up for local alerts and follow the National Weather Service for updates. Have a battery-operated weather radio handy to receive information during power outages.
Review Insurance Policies
Ensure your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance covers hurricane damage. Consider additional flood insurance if you’re in a flood-prone area.
Communicate With Family
Establish a communication plan with family members. Designate a meeting point in case you get separated.
Practice Your Plan
Conduct drills with your family to ensure everyone knows what to do in case of a hurricane. Familiarity can reduce panic during an emergency.
By taking these steps, you can help ensure your safety and that of your loved ones during hurricane season. Pick up your hurricane preparedness guide today from your neighborhood watch. Stay safe, SSH!
